YouTube and FoxSportsOhio.com -- Students of Maple Heights High School WIN Teen Video Contest
Ohio teens were encouraged to submit their own video telling their friends why it's important to follow safe driving practices for the Teen "Be On TV" contest sponsored by FOX Sports Ohio and the Ohio Dept. of Public Safety during National Teen Driver Safety Week. The winning video, called "Texting While Driving," was created by students at Maple Heights High School and will air during a Cleveland Cavaliers game on FOX.

-- FSHS Students Smart'N Up
The West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration is helping teens understand what it is like to drive while intoxicated in a safe environment. Today the ABC brought its Smart'N Up DUI simulator to Fairmont Senior High School, and the local television station produced a news clip about it. The $90,000 DUI simulator was donated by State Farm® from a Safe Neighbor grant.

-- Educational Initiatives Focus for Teen Driver Safety Week
The NJ Division of Highway Traffic Safety and Kean University have created an evidence-based safe driving orientation for parents called "Share the Keys." Approximately 90 minutes in length, the orientation is being presented by trained educators in schools, libraries, and other community-based settings across the state. Its five key objectives are: understanding GDL, being a good role model, effectively enforcing GDL at home, increasing practice driving hours, and controlling the keys.

Governors Highway Traffic Safety Association -- State Highway Safety Association Marks National Teen Driver Safety Week
To promote strong parent/teen interaction to encourage safe driving, the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) is partnering with the Ford Motor Company Fund on its Ford Driving Skills for Life (Ford DSFL) program. More than 40 state highway safety agencies across the country have been using the program to reduced teen driver-related crashes and fatalities.

Hutchinson Leader -- Minnesota Teens Called On to Create 'Buckle Up' TV Spots
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety (ABC) and AAA Minnesota/Iowa are sponsoring a public service announcement contest for students grades 9-12 in the state. The Buckle Up, Teens! TV Commercial Challenge began on the first day of National Teen Driver Safety Week (October 16, 2011) and runs through April 16, 2012. Winning entries will receive $1,000 and airtime during the MTV Video Music Awards.

To call attention to National Teen Driver Safety Week, parents of children killed in teen-related crashes from across the country met in Washington, DC to urge Congress to pass the STANDUP Act, also known as the Safe Teen and Novice Driver Uniform Protection Act. As part of the initiative, a letter signed by 28 parents was sent to each member of Congress, calling for quick action on this important legislation. The Act would set minimum standards for state Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws for novice drivers. Strong GDL laws have been proven to reduce teen driver-related crashes. Each week a New Jersey teen dies as the result of a motor vehicle crash. To raise awareness about teen driver safety, the Brain Injury Association of New Jersey is hosting its second annual "U Got Brains Champion Schools Program" funded by the NJ Division of Highway Traffic Safety. Each participating school must develop its own project based on a topic related to teen driving safety. The top schools will be awarded a driving simulator. Teens are 50 percent more likely to crash the first month of driving independently than they are after driving solo for a year, according to a study released today by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. The study, conducted by the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center for the AAA Foundation, found that 57 percent of these crashes were at least partially caused by failing to slow down or yield and a lack of attention to the road. The NJ State Interscholastic Athletic Association is teaming up with the NJ Teen Safe Driving Coalition to help emphasize driver safety to athletes. Over the past five years crashes involving teen drivers are down 33 percent in Humboldt County, CA. County officials credit the decline to stepped up local prevention efforts. As part of its annual 'Drive 2 Stay Alive' campaign during National Teen Driver Safety Week, Eureka High School will use an $87,000 grant from State Farm® to purchase four driving simulators. The simulators will allow students to experience how it feels to drive while intoxicated. Students from all over the county will be given the opportunity to participate.

Partners for Safe Teen Driving (PSTD) is conducting a campaign across the state of Virginia during the month of October to raise teen awareness of the dangers of texting and driving. The campaign is sending posters to all high schools in the state and erecting highway billboards in 40 locations.
